Managing Acute Torticollis and Supporting Neck Health Naturally

Managing Neck Pain (Acute Torticollis) and Supporting Neck Health Naturally

Hello, Dr. Luke here from Naturally Well Chiropractic! Today, I’d like to share a story about a common issue I see frequently in my clinic: acute torticollis, or “twisted neck.”

Just a few months ago, my daughter Ashleigh woke up with severe neck pain. She had slept in a funny position and came into the clinic barely able to turn her head, her neck stiffened up like a board. This is what we call acute torticollis, and it can be excruciating. It’s something I encounter every week, and if you’ve ever experienced it, you know how frustrating it can be.

What is Acute Torticollis?

Acute torticollis is an intense, sudden pain in the neck, often caused by sleeping awkwardly, poor posture, or even sudden movements. It usually involves muscle spasms and a reduced range of motion, with symptoms that may include:

• Severe neck pain, often on one side

• Limited movement in the neck

• Muscle tightness and spasms

• Headaches, sometimes radiating to the shoulders

• Sensitivity to touch

For Ashleigh and others dealing with this, even the simplest tasks like driving, working, or just turning to speak with someone become a real challenge.

How Chiropractic Can Help

Chiropractic care can be a highly effective approach for relieving acute torticollis. Using gentle adjustments, soft tissue techniques, and exercises, we can help release the tension and promote healthier movement patterns in the neck. Through these adjustments, we aim to reduce inflammation, encourage proper alignment, and improve overall neck function.

Long-Term Support: Neck CARS for Spinal Health

For those of you dealing with or wanting to prevent neck pain, I recommend trying a simple but effective exercise called Controlled Articular Rotations (CARS). This involves slow, intentional movements designed to nourish and mobilize the joints in your neck, promoting better range of motion and stability.

Check out the neck CARS video above to keep your neck joints healthy and prevent issues like acute torticollis.

Lower back pain is often linked to a lack of regular movement, leading to stiffness and vulnerability to injury. In my chiropractic practice, I combine Functional Range Conditioning (FRC) techniques, like spinal segmentation and Controlled Articular Rotations (CARs), to improve mobility, build resilience, and prevent injuries. Daily spinal segmentation exercises, which involve controlled, wave-like spinal movements, enhance flexibility and control, helping the nervous system manage end-range motion where injuries often happen. Chiropractic care paired with FRC not only alleviates pain but empowers patients with the tools to maintain spinal health and improve quality of life.

At Naturally Well Chiropractic, we don’t just focus on treating the pain after it occurs; we focus on preventing it. By working to improve the movement in your spinal joints and retraining your body to move well, you set yourself up for better long-term health. I like to say that we don’t get injured doing things we’re used to—we get injured doing things outside of our comfort zone. If your body hasn’t been trained to handle a movement, you’re more likely to hurt yourself when it happens unexpectedly.

What is Functional Range Conditioning (FRC)? FRC focuses on improving joint health by enhancing the range of motion, strength, and control of the joints. The core idea behind FRC is simple yet profound: when we prioritize the health and function of our joints, we can significantly improve overall mobility, reduce the risk of injury, and accelerate recovery. This approach targets the joints in a way that traditional exercises often overlook, leading to deeper healing and more sustainable results.
